Born in Auckland in 1903, Charles Tole studied at the University of Auckland and worked as a public servant. Encouraged by his brother, the artist John Tole began painting at the age of 37 but was a weekend and occasional painter until he retired in 1965. He exhibited with the Auckland Society of Arts, the Christchurch Group in 1948 and with his brother at Wellington’s Architectural Centre Gallery in 1957. His work included some semi-industrial themes painted in a cubist style.
The total number of works by Charles Tole offered for sale by auction since 1989 is 180, of which 146 (81%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $98,500 for Kaisei Maru, 1967-75 sold by Webb's in September 2022. This year one work has been offered for sale. Works by Charles Tole are held by the Museum Of New Zealand, Auckland Art Gallery and Christchurch Art Gallery.
