A painter, illustrator and author, Ellis Silas lived in the Trobriand Islands. He served in the AIF in World War I and was the only artist to paint and sketch actual battle scenes showing Australian soldiers in action at Gallipoli for the Australian War Museum, and about which he wrote and published a book. He was the recipient of several World War I service medals.

We have records of art auction sales by Ellis Silas from 1983 and in total 21 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 19 (90%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $6,038 for Circular Quay Sydney sold by GFL Fine Art in June 2012. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2020. Works by Ellis Silas are held by the Australian War Memorial.
