Carl Lock was born in 1924 and schooled in Adelaide. He was a seaman in the Australian Navy during World War II from 1942 to 1947 after which he studied at National Gallery Art School Melbourne from 1947 to 1950 where his tutors included Willliam Dargie. In 1949 he won the Bernard Hall Art Prize for students at the National Gallery for a portrait done in oils and was a finalist in the Art Gallery of New South Wales Archibald Prize in 1963.

Since 1970 we have recorded only one work being sold at auction by this artist, which was in 1978.
