Born in Manly, Sydney in 1924, Brownie Downing was a sister of stage designer Desmonde Downing. She worked as a commercial artist drawing children's fashion from 1942, and in 1947 began studying at the Julian Ashton School. During the 1950s Downing created designs for Christmas cards and pottery, and illustrated her first children's book. In the late 1950s she travelled to Europe with her husband, spending some time in Andorra, France, Spain, Ireland, Jamaica, the United State and Mexico before settling in Ireland. With her husband, they purchased a yacht and sailed the Mediterranean for twelve years, finally settling on the island of Majorca before moving to Andorra. She never returned to Australia. Brownie Downing is probably best known for her stylised drawings of Aboriginals.
