Born in the Northern Territory, Australian Aboriginal artist Billy Stockman is an elder of the Anmatyerre Tribe near Alice Springs. A painter of Aboriginal mythology, he was one of the founders of the Western Desert Papunya painting movement. Stockman's work was included in a travelling exhibition called 'Landscape and Image' to Indonesia in 1978. He was an Aboriginal Arts Board member (1975–79) and chairman of Papunya Tula Artists (1976–77). In his later years he lived mainly in Alice Springs. In 1988 he travelled to New York City for the opening of the Dreamings show at the Asia Society and with Michael Nelson Jagamarra created a sand painting as part of the exhibition.
