Born in Bucharest in 1955, Aida Tomescu studied extensively in Europe, USA and Sydney. Known for her abstract paintings, collages, drawings and prints, she first exhibited in Sydney in 1981, but has since held over 30 solo shows exhibited in Australia, as well as exhibiting in Hong Kong, New Zealand Singapore and England. She received awards from the Bucharest Arts Council in 1978 and 1979, and the Australian Visual Arts Board in 1980. She was the winner of the inaugural LFSA Arts 21 Fellowship in 1996 at the Heide Museum of Modern Art, Melbourne, the Sulman Prize in 1996, the Wynne prize in 2001, and the Dobell Prize for Drawing 2003 at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
