Born in Inverell, New South Wales in 1897, Esling studied at the Julian Ashton School in Sydney. He painted with Elioth Gruner at one stage and most of his paintings show Gruner's influence. He painted theatre scenery in Sydney for some time. He exhibited his traditional landscapes executed in oil in Sydney, with the Society of Artists and the Royal Art Society from 1918 and was a finalist in the Art Gallery of New South Wales Wynne Prize in in 1932, 1950, and 1960.
