Born in Sydney in 1899, Mansell received commissions from all over Australia to design textiles and ceramic murals with aboriginal motifs. His interest in Aboriginal art was inspired by materials collected by Sir Baldwin Spencer on various expeditions and by Arnhem Land photographs. His works are frequently painted with natural pigments and self-ground ochre tints and included prints, paintings, watercolours, fabrics, scarves, greeting cards, ceramic murals and even furniture.
The earliest auction listing we have for Byram Mansell is in 1975 and in total 110 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 79 (72%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $1,300 for A Toast to Kulamara. First Australian Ballet by Carl Gheysens sold by Lawsons in July 1988. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2022. Works by Byram Mansell are held by the National Gallery of Australia and Art Gallery of Western Australia.
