Born in England about 1860, Frank Brooke-Smith arrived in New Zealand as a child. He trained as a lawyer, and had art lessons in Dunedin, joining a small Bohemian art club. He married and moved to Melbourne where he worked as an artist and teacher. Brookesmith and his family returned to New Zealand, teaching for a time at Invercargill Boys' High School, then privately. He exhibited his paintings with the Otago Art Society from 1886 and in major New Zealand centres, as well as with the Victorian Art Society in 1902.
