A New Zealand watercolourist and black and white illustrator, Thomas Cousins was born in England in 1840 and arrived in New Zealand in about 1863. He exhibited at the New Zealand Exhibition in Dunedin in 1865, and shortly afterwards moved to Victoria, where he illustrated Marcus Clarke's 'For the Term of his Natural Life'. Cousins was back in New Zealand by 1876 where he continued to work.
The total number of works by Thomas Cousins offered for sale by auction since 1985 is 51, of which 38 (75%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $3,270 for Waimakariri Valley sold by International Art Centre in April 2013. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2022. Works by Thomas Cousins are held by the Christchurch Art Gallery and National Gallery of Victoria.
