Born in Brisbane in 1915, Leonard Shillam studied sculpture in Brisbane, London and in Italy. He married fellow student Kathleen O'Neill, and from 1939 to 1949 worked as a poultry farmer. He became a full time sculptor from 1950, holding joint exhibitions with his wife. Shillam taught art, becoming head of the sculpture department at Brisbane's College of Art. He received several commissions from Queensland churches and schools, and in 1986 was awarded the Order of Australia for services to sculpture.

The highest price recorded for the artist is $10,350 for Reclining Nude sold by Christies in August 1998. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2020. Works by Leonard Shillam are held by the Queensland Art Gallery and Art Gallery of NSW.
