Born in Thames, New Zealand in 1891, Vera Cummings received a scholarship to attend the Elam School of Fine Arts in Auckland at the age of 11. There, she studied under C. F. Goldie, the well known painter of Maori studies. Attesting to Goldie's influence, Cummings was noted for her portraits of Maoris, mainly elderly.
The total number of works by Vera Cummings offered for sale by auction since 1974 is 324, of which 253 (78%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $35,453 for Harata Rewiri Tarapata sold by International Art Centre in November 2020. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2023. Works by Vera Cummings are held by the Auckland Art Gallery.
