Born in 1891 and raised in the Manawatu, Helen Crabbe studied at Sydney Art School and the Royal College of Art, London. Working in watercolour, pen and ink she produced figure studies of people performing every day tasks, signing her works 'Barc'. From the mid-1940s she ran classes in Wellington.
