Born in Scotland in 1831, Joseph Panton outraged his traditionally military family by failing to complete a degree at the Scottish Naval and Military Academy. In 1851 he was sent to Australia, where he went gold prospecting in Victoria. He found little gold, but became a popular gold commissioner. Panton had a keen interest in drawing and in the mid-1850s went to Paris to study art. He later became a member of the Victorian Academy of Arts, and first president of the Victorian Art Society. Panton's drawings have historical value and are represented in the National Gallery of Victoria, Mitchell and La Trobe libraries and the Bendigo Art Gallery.
