Born in Hull, England in 1940, Michael Kitching arrived in Australia in 1952, and although he had no formal training, he became a respected painter, industrial designer, sculptor and assemblage artist. As an assemblage artist he works with aluminium, perspex, cardboard, pigment, steel, timber and polystyrene and in 1964 he won the Blake Prize for religious art with an assemblage of miscellaneous materials. He has also won prizes in competitive art exhibitions in New South Wales as well as completing public commissions.
