Born in England in 1926, Peter Laverty arrived in Australia in 1951. He studied at the Winchester School of Art prior to his arrival in Australia. He was a teacher and later head of the National Art School, Sydney from 1952 to 1971. He became director of the Art Gallery of NSW in 1971, a position he held until 1977.As an artist he has exhibited widely in Sydney, Canberra, Toowoomba, Perth, Adelaide and Canberra.
