Born in Queensland in 1924, Joan Ricketts studied at Central Technical College, Brisbane before World War II. From 1942 to 1945 she worked in the Intelligence Section of the Volunteer Defence Corps preparing maps. She taught art at Adult Education classes until 1978, and exhibited largely to raise funds for the restoration of important National Trust and other historical buildings. In 1977 she was awarded an MBE for services to the arts and community. Joan Ricketts' work is represented in institutional and private collections in Australia and overseas.
