Sydney born Freda Rhoda Robertshaw studied commercial art at the East Sydney Technical College. Her teachers included Frank Medworth, William Dobell, Arthur Murch and Charles Meere. Graduating in 1937, she became apprenticed to Meere as a figure painter, developing a neoclassical style and assisting Meere in his major painting, Australian Beach Pattern of 1940. Eventually establishing her own commercial art studio, she worked freelance for the industrial advertiser L. B Rennie, and returned to her earlier interest in watercolour landscapes and still life paintings of flowers. These she exhibited with the Society of Artists, the Royal Art Society of New South Wales and the Australian Watercolour Institute.
