A deaf and dumb engraver, John Carmichael was born about 1811 and arrived in Sydney in 1825. He made caricatures of Aborigines and also made the plates for the 'Select Views of Sydney' 1829 and for the 1833 New South Wales Calendar. Carmichael died in 1857.
Since 1970 we have recorded only one work being sold at auction by this artist, which was in 1999.
