Born in Dunedin, New Zealand in 1938, Lanceley moved with his family to Sydney the following year. He studied at the East Sydney Technical College in the mid 1950s and in 1965 he won the Helena Rubinstein Travelling Scholarship. He travelled to London that year and had a solo exhibition with Marlborough Fine Art in 1966. Lanceley lived and worked in London for the next 10 years, and as well as exhibiting, taught at the Chelsea School of Arts. He arrived back in Australia in 1980 and a major exhibition of his work was held at the Art Gallery of NSW in 1987. In 1990 he received an Order of Australia. He is known for his pop art and use of collage. He has exhibited widely throughout Australia and in New York.
