Born in Melbourne, George Bell studied at the National Gallery School, in London and Paris. He exhibited at the Salon, Munich and the Royal Academy and was the official war artist in France during World War I. Bell started teaching in Melbourne and became the art critic of the Melbourne Sun Pictorial. and founder of the Contemporary Art Group in Melbourne in 1932 and later the Contemporary Art Society.
