Brian Armstrong was born in 1949 and grew up in Montrose at the base of Mt Dandenong, Victoria. He formally began learning to paint at age 13, and commenced studying art at Swinburne Art College but dropped out, reverting to private tuition. He then worked in a variety of jobs before setting up a teaching studio in Mornington. His first solo exhibition was in 1979. He was finalist for the Moran Portrait Prize in 1992 and won the Alice Bale scholarship in 1994, which entailed a year travelling, painting and studying Art in Europe. He is a tonal impressionist and his work covers a wide spectrum including landscape, nudes, portraiture, still life and interiors, with media mainly oils and pastels. He now lives and works in the country town of Avoca in Victoria.
