James Stirling was born in Lanarkshire, Scotland in 1791 and entered the navy at the age of 12. He went on to serve in the Napoleonic wars and the war between Britain and the US in 1812. Having explored the western area of Australia he persuaded the British government to establish the Swan River Colony in Western Australia. He became the first Governor and Commander-in-Chief of Western Australia in 1828 and remained in that position until 1838 after which he resumed his naval career. Stirling became an admiral in the British Navy in the 1860s and died in retirement at Guildford UK on April 22 1865.
