Born in New Zealand in 1894, Kemble served in the New Zealand army in World War I and arrived in Sydney in 1921. He had no known formal art training, but from 1941 he worked as a commercial artist, art director and newspaper and magazine illustrator. He was a finalist in the Art Gallery of New South Wales Archibald Prize in numerous editions from 1935 to 1948, the Wynne Prize in 1939, and also had his work included in the Sulman and Blake Prize exhibitions. From 1952 he was a committee member of the Contemporary Art Society. He had several exhibitions in Sydney and exhibited in London with Royal Watercolour Society in 1958 and 1959.

The highest price recorded for the artist is $2,760 for Landscape from Mt Dandenong, Victoria sold by Sotheby's in May 1999. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2020.
