Herbert Cotton was born in New England, NSW in 1872. A painter, cartoonist, caricaturist and illustrator, his first cartoons were published in the Bulletin magazine in 1894, after which he worked for a number of newspapers and magazines, as a cartoonist and caricaturist. As a painter, he favoured watercolours, depicting landscapes and coastal scenes in the environs of Sydney. He exhibited in the 1886 Colonial and Indian Exhibition, the 1887 Adelaide Jubilee International Exhibition and others.

The total number of works by Herbert Cotton offered for sale by auction since 1979 is 55, of which 47 (85%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $2,880 for Sunlight Harbour, Taylor Bay, Sydney sold by Leonard Joel in December 2014. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2023.
