Herbert Cotton was born in New England, NSW in 1872. A painter, cartoonist, caricaturist and illustrator, his first cartoons were published in the Bulletin magazine in 1894, after which he worked for a number of newspapers and magazines, as a cartoonist and caricaturist. As a painter, he favoured watercolours, depicting landscapes and coastal scenes in the environs of Sydney. He exhibited in the 1886 Colonial and Indian Exhibition, the 1887 Adelaide Jubilee International Exhibition and others.
