Marianne Baillieu (nee Dalhoff) was born in Stockholm to Danish parents, and in 1948 moved with her family first to California for a year, and then New Zealand. She studied arts and psychology at Canterbury (NZ) University. However she did not complete the course and commenced work with an Auckland psychiatrist. After several years she followed her brother who had moved to Australia and she worked at Monash University while studying anthropology and and politics. She met her future husband Ian Baillieu in the mid 1960s and was married in 1967. They lived in South Yarra, Victoria and in 1971, she opened Realities Gallery showing mainly Australian artisits, firstly in South Yarra, and later in Toorak. Almost every major living Australian artist and emerging artist showed at the gallery, some in solo shows others in group shows. In 1980 she sold the gallery and began painting, in an abstract style that was uniquely hers. She had 15 solo exhibitions and was included in many group shows. She was a finalist in the Archibald, Sulamn and Blake prizes.
