Ernest Marcuse was born 1 December 1900 in Berlin. After completing his schooling he attended Berlin School of Interior Design & Cabinetmaking (furniture design & drawing) and Reiman School (fashion drawing & advertising) from 1918-25. He worked as a freelance press artist specialising in industrial, architectural & figure drawings and for a Berlin daily newspaper, German magazines from 1926-33. In 1939 he moved to London where he worked briefly as a commercial artist, and then emigrated to Melbourne. Before joining the Australian Army he worked briefly for "The Age" newspaper. At the conclusion of World War II he worked as a freelance commercial artist, until 1970 when he became a full time artist. His basic style has been described as "realism combined with impressionism" and he worked in watercolour, pencil and/or ink drawing, acrylic, gouache, mixed media and as a printmaker.
