Born in the Ukraine in 1910, Kmit studied at the Academy of Fine Arts at Cracow, and taught painting in both eastern and western Europe before coming to Australia in 1950. His style of painting is largely influenced by the Byzantine. However, after spending time in America in the early 1960s, his painting style changed from the icon stage to a more fully developed one.
