Derwent Lees was born in Melbourne in 1885 and studied at the University of Melbourne and Slade School, London where he continued as assistant drawing master until 1918. He made his career in London, which was the location of his first exhibition in London in 1913 and he occasionally exhibited in Australia but his career was cut short by a mental health problem, and during the last 10 years of his life he was barely able to work.

The highest price recorded for the artist is $4,600 for Reclining Nude sold by Christies in April 1998. This year one work has been offered for sale.
