Born in England in 1811 Owen Stanley was a Royal Navy officer. As captain of the Rattlesnake he surveyed the East and North-East coast of Australia. A topographical artist he sketched many previously unknown areas and peoples as well as animals and marine life.

Since 1970 we have recorded only one work being sold at auction by this artist, which was in 2005.
