Born in Victoria in 1906, Stokes studied at the National Gallery School in Melbourne and in 1929 she was awarded the National Gallery School Travelling Scholarship, which took her to Europe. She studied at the Royal Academy in London and in paris at the Academie Lohte. On her return to Australia she became a leader of the modernist movement. She frequently painted female nudes, and it was these paintings which brought her to public notice. She exhibited in the 1952 Art Council of Britain Exhibition of Australian Contemporary Art and in the following year she held a one-woman show in Melbourne.
