Ji Chen was born in Shanghai China in 1960. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Shanghai Drama Institute in 1984 and became a set designer for the Beijing Opera Company of China. He arrived in Australia in 1989 with his family. Working in oil, he paints, landscapes, seascapes and figure studies. He has been a finalist in The Fleurieu Peninsula Biennale Art Prize in 2002, 2004 and 2006. In 2005 he won the $20,000 Best of the Show Gold Medal Award at the Herald Sun Camberwell Art Show in Melbourne. In 2016 he was the winner of the People's Choice Award at the invitation-only Tattersalls Landscape Art Prize. Ji Chen has participated in solo and group exhibitions in galleries in Adelaide, Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne, London and United States.
