Born in Victoria in 1881, Traill studied in Melbourne under John Mather at the National Gallery School from 1901 to 1905, and in London from 1907 to 1909. A painter and etcher, she was one of the leading women artists of her time. She exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1909 and at the Paris Salon in 1909 and 1926 and throughout Australia. During World War I she was a nurse in France for 3 years. After her return to Australia she spent time painting in Cental Australia. The Queensland Art Gallery held a restrospective of her work in 1989.
