Born in Berlin, Germany in 1917, Cardamatis arrived in Australia prior to World War II. He studied at the East Sydney Technical College and at the George Bell School, Melbourne c1939-c1943 after which he returned to Sydney. He was a member of the Sydney Group, also known as the "Sydney Charm School" which included artists such as William Dobell, Russell Drysdale, Donald Friend and Lloyd Rees. Active c1930 to 1946, as well as painting, he created theatre sets and costumes. He returned to Europe in 1946.
