Born in England in 1808, Calder spent some time with the Royal Ordinance Survey before being appointed Assistant Surveyor in Van Diemen's Land in 1829. He was an energetic surveyor and explorer and made many expeditions throughout Tasmania. Durign his travels he made many sketches of the Tasmanian landscape. In 1859 he became Surveyor-General and, on his retirement after 40 years as a surveyor, Sergeant-at-Arms.
