The Liverpool-born Bernard Hall came to Australia in 1892, following his appointment as Director of the National Gallery of Victoria and Head of the Art School, a position he held for 43 years. Previously, Hall had studied at the London School of Design (now the Royal College of Art), and undertook post-graduate work in Antwerp, and in Munich under Karl von Piloty. From 1883 he had exhibited at the Royal Academy. Hall eventually made outstanding purchases for the Gallery through the Felton Bequest. In teaching, he continued the Munich method introduced by his predecessor, George Frederick Folingsby. His students included Hugh Ramsay, James Quin, Margaret Preston, Penleigh Boyd, Max Meldrum and W. B. McInnes.
