Born in Liverpool, England in 1888, John Haley was a full-time artist who migrated to new Zealand after World War I. Painting in oils and watercolour, he exhibited in galleries in Auckland and was an exhibiting and working member of the Auckland Society of Arts between 1921 and 1927 and in 1936 in Melbourne. In the 1930s he worked as a saleman and later set up his own business. He also taught at secondary level.

The earliest auction listing we have for John Haley is in 1979 and in total 68 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 53 (78%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $2,636 for St Pauls and Ludgate Hill from Ludgate Circus, London sold by International Art Centre in March 2009.
