Born in England in 1796, George Rowe was known for his watercolour landscapes, lithography and etchings. He arrived in Australia in 1852 after being commissioned by the British Government to make watercolour drawings of the Victorian Goldfields. During this visit Rowe painted some fine panoramic views of Ballarat, Bendigo and Melbourne. He also visited Hobart and Sydney before his return to England in 1859. Rowe's work is represented in the Dixson Gallery of the Mitchell Library in Sydney.
