Born in Leeds, England in 1906 Alex Poignant arrived in Australia in 1926. A photographer and camerman he is remembered for his photographs of noted Australians. He was the film cameraman on the film "The Overlanders". He was one of the most influential photographers in Australia of this time. A biographic exhibition of his early life in Perth, Western Australia was held in 2011.

The earliest auction listing we have for Axel Poignant is in 1985 and in total 17 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 12 (71%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $4,880 for Swagman 1953 sold by Sotheby's in October 2019.
