Born in England in 1857, George Rossi Ashton arrived in Australia in 1879. A painter and illustrator, he covered many topical events of the period including the capture of Ned Kelly in 1880. He worked for the 'Illustrated London News', the 'Illustrated Australian News' and, from 1888 to 1893, as staff artist for the 'Bulletin'.
We have records of art auction sales by George Ashton from 1975 and in total 28 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 16 (57%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $4,250 for Firing Practice sold by Leonard Joel in July 1987. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2017. Works by George Ashton are held by the National Gallery of Australia.
