Born in New Zealand in 1950, Simon Payton studied at University of Canterbury. An expressionist painter and assemblage artist he is also known for his portraits. As well as New Zealand, he has exhibited in Germany, Holland, USA, and Britain. In 1989 he won the National Bank Art Award for Contemporary Painting, at the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts, and in 2002 and 2004 he was a finalist in the Adam Portraiture Award, New Zealand Portrait Gallery, Wellington.
