John Kendrick Blogg, now primarily known as a talented wood carver, was also a poet, hymn writer, industrial chemist and perfume manufacturer. He was born in Toronto, Canada in 1851 and studied chemistry at Toronto University before becoming a junior partner in his uncle's firm of dispensing chemists. He left Canada and arrived in Melbourne in 1877 and in 1884 established a business as manufacturing chemists based in Melbourne. As a wood carver, he carved a wooden casket for King Albert of Belgium in 1915. A sculptured panel he had carved was presented to the Prince of Wales when he visited Melbourne in 1920.
