Born in Sydney in 1884, Walter Jardine was best known as a black and white illustrator leaving school at the age of 12 for an apprenticeship at a newspaper. He also studied design, colour and drawing at J. S. Watkins's commercial-art classes. He became a newspaper illustrator and then later started his own graphic art business. He moved to America in 1923 and created ads for many well known American companies. He returned to Sydney in 1928 and working freelance, he was able attract many good clients. During the 1950s and 1960s he taught by correspondence for the Art Training Institute, Melbourne, and continued working into his 80s.
