Born in Albury, New South Wales in 1927, Earle Backen studied at the Julian Ashton School in Sydney, and, after winning the New South Wales government travelling scholarship, in London and Paris. Backen returned to Australia in 1959, and was awarded the first prize in the National Graphic Arts exhibition in Sydney in 1960.
The total number of works by Earle Backen offered for sale by auction since 1974 is 100, of which 68 (68%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $1,560 for Still Life with Bag & Scarf sold by Lawson~Menzies (now trading as Menzies) in November 2005. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2022. Works by Earle Backen are held by the Art Gallery of NSW, National Gallery of Australia and a further four major public national galleries (see list below).
