Born in Dunedin in 1864, William Sprott studied at the Canterbury College School of Art and later was a teacher there. He exhibited in the South Island from 1882, and was said to have influenced his friend, artist Alfred Walsh. Sprott died in Auckland in 1893 at the age of 29.
