Heide Smith was born in Germany in 1935 and completed a four year apprenticeship in the photographic department of an industrial company and worked as a photo journalist for a daily newspaper for three years. She emigrated to Australia in 1971, initially working as a freelancer in Melbourne and Sydney, before moving to Canberra in 1979. Heide Smith was commissioned by the National Library of Australia to photograph 'Churches and Churchmen of Canberra'. Her published books of photographs include I love Canberra (1983) and Tiwi: the Life and Art of Australia's Tiwi people (1990) and Shooting at the Moon (1994) recording the first elections in Cambodia after the fall of Pol Pot.

Since 1970 we have recorded only one work being sold at auction by this artist, which was in 1998.
