Born in Christchurch in 1917, William Sutton studied at the Canerbury School of Art in Christchurch from 1934-38 and at the Anglo-French Art Centre in London. He later taught at the Canterbury School of Art and became head of painting in 1950. Well known as a versatile artist painting both landscapes and portraits, he held a retrospective exhibition in Christchurch in 1973. Sutton served on the council of the Canterbury Society of Arts and lectured at the Canterbury School of Art. His work is represented in major art galleries in New Zealand.
