Portraitist Esther Erlich was born in Melbourne in 1955 and was awarded a Diploma of Art from Caulfield Institute of Technology in 1976 and a Diploma of Education in 1977. Since 1983 she has held over 51 solo exhibitions in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth, and participated in 72 group exhibitions. She won the prestigious Doug Moran Portrait Prize in 1998 and the Art Gallery of New South Wales Archibald Prize People’s Choice Award in 2000, and has been a finalist in the Archibald Prize and the Portia Geach Memorial Award on multiple occasions.
