Born in 1909, Margaret Francis studied with her well known older sister Dorothea (1903 - 1975) under George Bell between 1941-1943 in Melbourne. A modernist painter, she exhibited her paintings with the Melbourne Society of Women Painters and Sculptors in most years from 1962 to 1975 and with the Melbourne Contemporary Artists from 1940 to 1944 and in 1948. During World War II she made hand-crafted toys for the Red Cross. Returning to painting in the late 1950s she exhibited with her sister Dorothea until the death of her sister in 1975. A joint exhibition of the work of the Francis sisters was held in Melbourne in 1987.
