Born in NSW in 1888, Gye studied in Melbourne. He is best remembered as an illustrator and painter. He was a cartoonist for the 'Bulletin' for many years, and also illustrated several books; among them, 'Songs of a Sentimental Bloke' by C.J. Dennis.
We have records of art auction sales by Hal Gye from 1975 and in total 70 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 54 (77%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $4,800 for The Sentimental Bloke sold by Leonard Joel in April 1988. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2023. Works by Hal Gye are held by the National Gallery of Australia, Geelong Gallery and Art Gallery of Western Australia.
